Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying and Dividing Money

Adding Money

Always add rupees with rupees and paise with paise.

Example 1: Add Rs 157.80 and Rs 143.45.

Solution:

  Rs
P
     157
80
   143
45
      301
25

Here, 80 p + 45 p = 125 p
125 p can be written as 100 p + 25 p.

Write 25 p in the paise column and carry over 100 p or Rs 1 to the rupees column.
Now, Rs 157 + Rs 143 + Rs 1 = Rs 301
Thus, the sum is Rs 301.25.

Example 2: Shivam bought a trolley bag for Rs 3187.50 and a school bag for Rs 645.00. Find the total amount spent.

Solution:

Rs
P
    3187
50
645
00
 3832
50

Cost of the trolley bag
Cost of the school bag
 Total cost

Thus, he spent a total of Rs 3832.50 on buying the bags.

Subtracting Money

Subtract rupees from rupees and paise from paise. If it is not possible to subtract in the paise column, borrow Rs 1 or 100 p from the rupees column and then subtract.

Example 1: Subtract Rs 352.75 from Rs 475.35.

Solution:

  Rs
P
   475
35
– 352
75
  122
60

75 p cannot be subtracted from 35 p.
So, borrow Rs 1 or 100 p from the rupees column.
Regroup Rs 475 to Rs 474 and 35 p to 135 p.

Thus, the difference is Rs 122.60.

Example 2: Subtract Rs 445.44 from Rs 975.36.

Solution:

  Rs
P
   975
36
– 445
44
   529
92

Thus, the difference is Rs 529.92.

Multiplying Money

Multiplication of money is the same as multiplication of any two numbers. Do remember to carry over Rs 1 whenever 100 p is crossed.

Multiplication with conversion to paise

Example 1: What is Rs 357.25 × 4?

Solution:

Step 1: Convert to paise.
Rs 357.25 × 100 = 35725 p

Step 2: Multiply the paise by 4.
35725 p × 4 = 142900 p

Step 3: Convert back the paise to rupees.
142900 p ÷ 100 = Rs 1429.00

Thus, Rs 357.25 × 4 = Rs 1429.00

Multiplication without conversion to paise

Example 2: Multiply Rs 358.56 by 8.

Solution:

Rs
P
358
56
×
8
2868
48

Dividing Money

The division of money is the same as the division of two numbers.

Division with conversion to paise

Example 1:  What is Rs 348.24 ÷ 2?

Solution:
Step 1: Convert to paise.

Rs 348.24 × 100 = 34824 p

Step 2: Divide as for normal division.

Step 3: Convert back the paise to rupees.

17412 p ÷ 100 = Rs 174.12

Thus, Rs 348.24 ÷ 2 = Rs 174.12

Division without conversion to paise

Example 2: Divide Rs 345.24 by 3.

Solution:

Thus, Rs 345.24 ÷ 3 = Rs 115.08

Making a Bill

A bill is a written or printed statement of the money that we pay for goods or services.

The shopkeeper prepares a list of the things bought, their prices and the total amount to be paid. This list is called a bill.

Example 1: Manish took his family out for dinner. He ordered the following food items.

     ·        4 plates vegetable fried rice at Rs 250 each
     ·        2 plates fruit salad at Rs 25 each
     ·        3 lemonades at Rs 70 each
     ·        2 ice creams at Rs 45.50 each

Prepare the bill and calculate the total amount spent on dinner.

Solution:  The bill is as follows:

Cost (in Rs)
Vegetable fried rice
250
4
1000

Example 2: Mrs Sinha bought following items from a grocery shop.

     ·        5 kg onion at Rs 25.50 per kg
     ·        2 kg sugar at Rs 40.50 per kg
     ·        4 kg potato at Rs 20.00 per kg
     ·        10 kg rice at Rs 42.50 per kg

Prepare the bill and calculate the total amount spent on groceries.

Solution:  The bill is as follows:
