Basic Addition
Addition
means keeping the things together. The sign of addition is “+”. To add two
numbers, we put + sign between them.
For example,
2 + 5 = 7
Example 1:
Add the following
green and yellow stickers.
Solution:
We have 4
green stickers and 5 yellow stickers.
Total number
of stickers = 4 stickers + 5 stickers = 9 stickers
Therefore,
the total number of stickers is 9.
Example 2.
Add the given red
and pick stars.
Solution:
We have 2 red
stars and 3 pink stars.
Total number
of stars = 2 stars + 3 stars = 5 stars
Therefore,
the total number of stars is 5.
Example 3.
Add the numbers
given on the leaf.
Solution:
We have, 4 + 3 = 7
Addition using Number Line
To add 5 and
3 using a number line, we move from 0 to 5 and draw an arrow. Then from 5, we
move 3 steps to right to reach at 8 and draw an arrow. Now, the final position
8 is the sum of 5 and 3.
Addition by Counting Forward
Addition Order
When we add
numbers in any order, we get the same sum.
So, we can
see that 1 + 3 = 3 + 1 = 4.
Adding Zero
When we add
0 with any number, the sum is the number itself.
Adding One
When we add
1 to any number, we get the next counting number.
Addition of Three Numbers
Example
1: Add 1 + 3 + 2.
Solution:
To add 1, 3
and 2, we first add 1 and 3, which is equal to 4. Then, we add 4 and 2, which
is equal to 6.
Therefore,
the sum of 1, 3 and 2 is 6.
Addition of 2-Digit and 1-Digit Numbers
Example
1: Add 35 + 4.
Solution:
Addition of Two 2-Digit Numbers
Example
1: Add 47 + 31.
Solution:
Story Sums
In out daily
life, we face many addition problems. Let us see a few of them.
Example
1: Neha has 4 red
bindis and 3 green bindis. How many bindis does she have?
Solution:
Number of
red bindis = 4
Number of
green bindis = 3
Total number
of bindis = 4 + 3 = 7
Therefore, Neha
has 7 bindis.
Example 2:
Rishabh has 3
chocolates and her sister Riya has 5 chocolates. How many chocolates do they
have altogether?
Solution:
Number of
chocolates with Rishabh = 3
Number of
chocolates with Riya = 5
Total number
of chocolates = 3 + 5 = 8 chocolates.
Therefore,
they have 8 chocolates altogether.
