Basic Concepts of Multiplication

When a group of things are added many times, then it is called repeated addition.

Multiplication is nothing but a repeated addition.

        3         +          3           +           3            +             3       =       12

We have 3 balls in a group.

When we add 3 balls 4 times, we get,

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12

        Or

4 × 3 = 12

Here, 3 is the number of balls in each group and 4 is the number of groups.

4 is called multiplicand, 3 is called multiplier and 12 is called the product.

Let us see one more example.

We have 2 pens in each group and there are 5 such groups.

The total number of pens = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10

Or

5 × 2 = 10

Thus, number of groups × number of items in each group = total number of items

Order in Multiplication

If we change the order of numbers in a multiplication problem, the product does not change.

For example, 2 × 4 = 4 × 2        (Since 2 × 4 = 8 and 4 × 2 = 8)

If mean 2 groups of 4 carrots is the same as 4 groups of 2 carrots.

This can be shown as follows:

Similarly,

3 + 3 = 2 + 2 + 2

Or

2 × 3 = 3 × 2

Multiplication of 1-digit Numbers

We can multiply 1-digit numbers as follows:

Multiplication of 2-digit Numbers by 1-digit Numbers

We can multiply a 2-digit number by 1-digit number as follows:

Step 1: Multiply the ones digit by 3. 3 × 3 = 9. Write 9 in the ones place.

Step 2: Multiply tens digit by 3. 2 × 3 = 6. Write 6 in the tens place.

The product is 69.
