Basic Subtraction
When a few
things are removed from a group of things, then this process is called
subtraction. We denote subtraction with minus (-) sign.
Suppose
Shivam has 7 balls. He gave 4 balls to her sister. How many balls are left with
him?
We can show
this problem as follows:
Here, 7
balls – 4 balls = 3 balls
Therefore,
Shivam is left with 3 balls.
We can write
it as:
7 – 4 = 3
Example
1: Subtract 6 from 9.
Solution:
We can subtract it
as follows:
Example 2: Subtract 5 from 9.
Solution:
We can subtract it
as follows:
Subtraction using Cross Out
Let’s
subtract 6 from 15 by crossing out lines.
Draw 15
lines. Cross out 6 lines out of them. Count the remaining lines. It is 9.
Subtraction using Number Line
Let’s
subtract 5 from 9 using a number line.
Draw a
number line and mark points 0 to 10.
Draw an
arrow from 0 to 9 in forward direction.
Again, draw
an arrow from 9 to count 5 numbers backward.
We will
reach at 4.
Subtraction using Backward Counting
Let’s
subtract 3 from 5 using backward counting.
Count three
numbers back from five — four, three, two.
Thus, 5 – 3
= 2
Subtracting 1
When we
subtract 1 from a number, the answer is the number just before.
Subtracting Zero
When we
subtract zero from a number, the answer is the same number.
Subtracting the Same Number
When we
subtract a number from itself, the answer is zero.
Subtraction Sums
Example
1: Neha collected 12
leaves of peepal. If 4 leaves flew away, how many leaves are left with her?
Solution:
To solve this
problem, we need to subtract 4 from 12.
Therefore, 8 leaves are left with Neha.
Example 2:
Aryan has 13 chocolates.
He gave 7 chocolates to Riya. How many chocolates are left with Aryan?
Solution:
To solve this
problem, we need to subtract 7 from 13.
Therefore,
Aryan is left with 6 chocolates.
