Basics about a Clock

Hello children! I am a clock. Do you know what I do?

I tell you the time. I have 12 numbers written in the order from 1 to 12.

I have two hands, one long and one short. The long hand is called the minute hand and the short hand is called the hour hand.

Reading Time in a Clock

If the minute hand is at 12, then the hour hand tells us the time.

In the above clock, the minute hand is at 12 and the hour hand is at 8.

Therefore, the time is 8 o’clock. We can write it as 8:00.

Can you tell the time in the following clocks?

In this clock, the minute hand is at 12 and the hour hand is at 3.

So, the time is 3 o’clock. We can write it as 3:00.

In this clock also, the minute hand is at 12 and the hour hand is at 11.

So, the time is 11 o’clock. We can write it as 11:00.

Understanding a Day

A day has 24 hours, which includes 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night.

A day starts with morning. The time till 12 o’clock is called morning.

The time of 12 o’clock is called noon.

The time from noon (12 o’clock) till the sunset is called afternoon. The duration of afternoon can vary depending on person and place.

Generally, the time from sunset till bedtime (around 9 or 10 o’clock) is called evening. The duration of evening can also vary depending on person and place.

The time from bedtime to wake-up time (around 4 o’clock) is called night. The duration of night may differ depending on person and place. Generally, it is taken from 10 o’clock to 4 o’clock.
